The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?
Somewhat rebellious! When I left, my teacher told me that 'my problem' was that I did not want to be like everyone else. I considered this to be an enormous compliment!
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
I have always loved to draw and paint and wanted to be an artist.
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
My two tabby cats Gwen and Dodo.
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
Grow fruit and vegetables on my allotment.
Q: What’s your favourite food?
Anything made with the fruit and veg that I have grown...and chocolate.
Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?
I don't feel that I have ever really grown up and most of the time, feel about 7 years old!
Q: Which three words describe you best?
Still somewhat rebellious!
Q: What is your favourite word?
Frabjous.
Q: What makes you cringe?
bullies.
Q: What do you day dream about?
Travelling.
Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
India. I am a member of a home swap group so have a chance to experience living in interesting new places for a time.
Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Don't give up!
Q: How long have you been a writer?
Over 30 years.
Q: Where do you do your writing?
I think about ideas all the time, but sketch them out in my studio at the top of the house.
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
Both the best and worst things are the amount of time you spend on your own.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
Memories of my childhood, watching people I meet and situations that make me laugh.
Q: Which of your own characters do you most identify with?
The badly behaved ones, particularly Frederika Brown who is a bear
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Don't give up!
Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?
I have worked as a children's illustrator since I left art school and kept wanting to change the text that I was illustrating, so started writing my own stories.
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
Dig the garden and bake bread.
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
Edward Lear's Nonsense, Alice in Wonderland and anything with gorgeous illustrations by Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac or Kay Neilsen.
