The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?
A bit of a swot. I hated sport and spent most of my time reading books.
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
Oh all sorts of things. A soldier, a pilot, a musician.
Q: What is your favourite word?
Catastrophise - to treat as a catastrophe something that is really just a minor mishap.
Q: What are you afraid of?
Heights. uggggh
Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?
When watching that old movie Carry On Up the Khyber. I had forgotten how good it was. I went out and bought the DVD.
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
The watch my father bought when he was demobbed from the Royal Air Force at the end of World War II. He had always wanted a good quality watch, but was never able to get one in the RAF. As soon as he left and returned to civvie street he started saving up for one. I still have it.
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
Coin collecting
Q: What’s your favourite food?
Roast beef and yorkshire pud!
Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
The captain of the Mary Celeste, so that I could ask him what really happened on board that ill fated ship.
Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
Avebury
Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
If you would be embarrassed to tell your friends about it, don't do it.
Q: How long have you been a writer?
About 25 years.
Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?
Not really. I always wanted to be a writer.
Q: Where do you do your writing?
I have a room in the garden set up as an office.
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
The best thing is the freedom it gives me, the worst things are all the deadlines that take that freedom away.
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
I look at my bank balance.
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
The Biggles books. Fantastic stuff.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
You cannot get enough practice. Just keep on writing things - and try out different types of writing as well. Do a mystery story, then try a romantic story, then try some poetry. Even if the only person who ever reads it is yourself you will be gaining valuable experience.
