The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

First a ballet dancer so I could wear a sticky out dress and silk shoes then a doctor. But all the time I wanted to be a writer too.

Q: What is your favourite word?

Meringue

Q: What are you afraid of?

The dark - isn't everyone?

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

Play tennis, read and paint coloured dog pictures.

Q: How long have you been a writer?

All my life. My mother said I was telling stories before I could properly speak. I have always loved making things up. Some people call this lying, but not me. My first book was published in 1986 but I had written lots before that which didn't get published.

Q: Where do you do your writing?

Mostly I write in my office which has a big window so I can see the garden. When it's very cold I take my laptop into the room with a fire and sit by that. It's still cold. This house is freezing.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Keep writing. Those first few words look awful but when you put a few more down with them they get better. Don't be scared. Try and write from the heart.
