The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: How long have you been a writer?
20 years
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
Best thing: I spend my life finding out interesting things then writing about them. Worst thing: It’s a solitary life – which is why I especially enjoy socialising with friends and family, playing music with other people and going on school visits.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
Reading, talking to people, watching documentaries... If you do what I do you keep your eyes and ears open and grab whatever takes your interest.
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
I always plan my books very carefully in advance, so I always know what’s going to happen. It’s just a case of getting down and doing it. If I can’t settle I go for a brisk walk – works wonders!
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
Geoffrey Willans and Ronald Searle’s ‘Molesworth’ books.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Read as much as you can – it’ll all sink in - and don’t write in a vacuum. Show your friends or your mum or your teacher, or put your stuff online on things like www.publishinghouse.me.uk/index.php where other viewers are asked to comment on your work.
