The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?
I liked school. I was good at English, Art and Languages, but very bad at Maths, Science and Games.
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
I really wanted to be a writer, but when asked, my "sensible" answer was a teacher. So I became a teacher - and now I'm a writer. Result!
Q: Which three words describe you best?
Cheerful, optimistic, enthusiastic
Q: What is your favourite word?
serendipity
Q: What makes you cringe?
People who try to make you feel small.
Q: What are you afraid of?
Heights, (and snakes, slugs and snails!)
Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?
Yesterday.
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
My address book, with all my friends' addresses in! And my photographs.
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
I read. I also knit, cook, walk and listen to music (mainly choral music.) But not all at the same time!
Q: What’s your favourite food?
Dark chocolate with nuts in. (No fruit, just nuts.)
Q: What do you day dream about?
Having a whole shelf full of my books!
Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?
Younger
Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?
Believing that you make your own luck, and getting on with it.
Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
Venice
Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Keep at it, girl!
Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?
I'd like a bit more self-confidence.
Q: What has life taught you?
Not to give up.
Q: How long have you been a writer?
Ever since I can remember. When I was in the Junior school, the Infant teachers often asked me to go down to the Infants and tell them a story. I made them up as I went along, and they were probably all highly derivative, but they children seemed to enjoy them, and I certainly enjoyed telling them!
Q: Where do you do your writing?
In my study, with my computer and my reference books all around me. But of course I can write anywhere if I've got a notebook and pen. (I hate writing in pencil!)
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
The best: You are never bored, because you're always thinking up new stories. The worst: There is no worst. I love my job!
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
Anywhere and everywhere! Wouldn't it be nice if there was a computer programme called "Ideas r us"? But there isn't, so I just find ideas coming at me from all over the place - suddenly an idea will arrive, and a light bulb pings in my head, and then I'm off!
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
Keep writing!
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
Too many to count, but the first book I remember reading and absolutely loving was "Alice in Wonderland".
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Keep going and don't give up. Be prepared to rewrite and rewrite many times. And listen to all the advice given to you by agents, publishers etc. They know what they're talking about!
