The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
When I was young I wanted to be a doctor or an astronaut but it never occurred to me that I could ever be a writer.
Q: Which three words describe you best?
Happy, Friendly and .... quirky?
Q: What is your favourite word?
Serendipity
Q: What’s your favourite food?
I love Olives, artichokes and chocolate, but not all together!
Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?
I like people who are trustworthy and honest
Q: How long have you been a writer?
My first books were published in 1996
Q: Where do you do your writing?
My favourite place to write is my shed in the garden, which is called 'Tuscany'. if I am travelling a lot I take a laptop with me and I write on trains, in waiting rooms, airports, on planes. If I don't have the laptop for any reason I will always have a notebook with me.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Read as much as you can of anything that you enjoy and write as much and as often as you can. But don't forget to go back and polish your writing and always write about things that excite or fascinate you. If you have to write about a particular subject find something different about it or look at it from a new angle so that you find something that intrigues you about it.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
I get ideas from everywhere but I love going for walks in the woods, or in wild places or wild weather where anything is possible. But at times it is something someone says and I start thinking... what if...?
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis was my favourite childhood book because it made me imagine that if you could go into something as ordinary as a wardrobe and end up in another world, then obviously an adventure could start just about anywhere.
