Authors Hotline - Where authors and their readers connect

The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

snap

I wanted to be a writer, a Shetland Sheep dog breeder and also a groom at a stud farm. Oh, and produce TV shows too and work backstage in the theatre. (All at the same time!)

Q: Which three words describe you best?

snap

positive, enthusiastic, energetic, all or nothing (OK, that's more than three!)

Q: What is your favourite word?

snap

YES!

Q: What are you afraid of?

snap

Hmm, I don't like being told off or told what to do but I'm not really afraid of those things. Mice make me jump and squeal when they run across a room and up a curtain! I don't like bats flying around me, or daddy long legs and I really don't like rats.

Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?

snap

This morning when Spike, my two year old, came downstairs with pants on his head and nothing else on at all!

Q: What is your most treasured possession?

snap

My rocking horse (it's a unicorn) and my laptop - a Macbook Air.

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

snap

I am not really a hobby person. The things I like doing tend to become my life. I rode when I was younger but I can't just do it once a week, if I start I have to do every day and I want to go in shows and do it properly and that doesn't fit in with having young children and writing a lot. To relax I read books, e-mail friends, see friends and walk my dogs.

Q: What strange habits do you have?

snap

Not many - I stay up very late and don't need much sleep. I'm not very good at sitting still or sitting properly on a chair, I'm always fidgeting and sitting at strange angles.

Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?

snap

I think I feel the age I am and I like being the age I am although I always felt older than I was when I was younger.

Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

snap

I'd like to meet J.K. Rowling.

Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?

snap

I couldn't choose between being positive, resolute, determined and loyal.

Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

snap

Be happy in your own skin and see silver linings. Whatever happens always try and think 'well, at least such and such happened...' It's better than concentrating on the bad stuff and usually some good comes out of everything even if it takes you a while to see it.

Q: What has life taught you?

snap

That just when you think you have life sorted out and sussed, something will happen to show you that you so haven't!

Q: How long have you been a writer?

snap

I've been published since 1998 but I've written and made up stories all my life.

Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?

snap

No, I always felt I was a writer, it just seemed to take longer for the rest of the world to realise that! I started writing properly i.e. trying to get published when I was 22 and it took 7 years.

Q: Where do you do your writing?

snap

Generally at home on my laptop in the kitchen or in bed or in the lounge, very occasionally in my study. I sometimes work in the pub too, or in a coffee shop and on trains. I can work anywhere.

Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?

snap

Best things are making a living from making up stories and not having to have a different type of job, working when I want and how I want, going round and meeting people in schools and libraries and meeting other writers too. The worst things are that it is hard work - the good days, when the writing is going well, are lovely but there are bad days too when it feels hard and lonely and frustrating and there is so much to do and so little time.

Q: Which of your own characters do you most identify with?

snap

Probably Ellie in Loving Spirit and Erin in Sky Horses.

Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?

snap

Have lots of deadlines then you can't have writers' block! Apart from that, set yourself down to write a certain numbers of words a day and make yourself do that even if they feel like they are rubbish. I find if I do that I can normally write my way out of writer's block. Sometimes I just sit and switch the bit of my brain off that wants to correct as I go and I just type not worrying about mistakes or typos, I just feel like I am channelling the words straight from my brain into the keyboard without really thinking, and then after an hour stop and look back and then start to edit and revise. That works really well for me. Though reading it back it sounds very weird!

Q: What was your favourite book as a child?

snap

Favourite authors are easier - Enid Blyton, Noel Streatfield, Ruby Ferguson, the Pullein-Thompson sisters, E. Nesbit, Willard Price, Walter Farley.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

snap

Keep writing always looking at what you do critically and trying to improve. Writing is a skill and the more you do the better you will get. Read a lot. Write stories you would like to read! If you want to be a published writer be prepared for a lot of rejections and keep believing in yourself.
