Authors Hotline - Where authors and their readers connect
CW4K

The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?

snap

Lazy. I day dreamed when I should have been listening. And a bit bossy. I made my friends act in plays I'd written. Sometimes they didn't want to.

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

snap

A trapeze artist in a circus - although I'm petrified of heights.

Q: Which three words describe you best?

snap

Loud, bossy, show-offy.

Q: What is your favourite word?

snap

Lunch?

Q: What makes you cringe?

snap

People complaining in restaurants.

Q: What are you afraid of?

snap

Heights and missing dinner.

Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?

snap

When my daughter and I ganged up on my poor husband. We tease him a lot, it's such a shame, ha, ha.

Q: What is your most treasured possession?

snap

My cats, Heathcliff and Jeremy.

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

snap

Flicking TV channels while I think about taking up some sort of sport.

Q: What strange habits do you have?

snap

I read on the loo, much to my family's annoyance.

Q: What’s your favourite food?

snap

Cheese.

Q: What do you day dream about?

snap

The plots of my books.

Q: What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

Singer or actor.

Richmal Crompton, who wrote the Just William books.

snap

Never turn down lunch.

Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?

snap

My age, my shape, the annoying way I sneeze.

Q: How long have you been a writer?

snap

Twenty five years.

Q: Where do you do your writing?

snap

In my little blue office which has stars on the ceiling.

Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?

snap

The best is spending time away with the fairies (and Goblins. And Witches, etc.) The worst is deadlines.

Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?

snap

Things I read, things I watch on TV, things people say and do.

Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?

snap

I sit and stare at a blank screen, gnash my teeth, weep a bit, then stare some more. Eventually something happens.

Q: What was your favourite book as a child?

snap

Just William, by Richmal Crompton.

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

snap

Just William, by Richmal Crompton.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

snap

Always have a pencil and paper on your person. Keep practising and don't give up.
