The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Best - getting a fan letter from a child who's enjoyed reading one of my books.Worst - being asked when I'm going to write the next 'Harry Potter'.

I just write through it.
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
Just William, Secret Seven, Bobby Brewster. Anything that made me laugh or held me enthralled.

Everywhere. Anything can start me off, a word, overheard conversations, watching and listening to children, something funny or strange happening.
Q: What book do you wish you had written?
I don't. There's lots of books I really admire but I don't wish I'd written them because they're someone else's story not mine. If I'd written them they'd be totally different.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Read, study the market so you know what children like reading then write the story that's bursting in your head, waiting to be written, but make sure that your characters and vocabulary are suitable for children today. And don't give up. Ever.
