Authors Hotline - Where authors and their readers connect

The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?

I was always interested in words. Whether the words were in English, French, Spanish or Italian, I always loved them. I also loved reading and wrtiing about space...I even designed little space rockets with tiny bedrooms and toilets!

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

An astronaut, or maybe play outside left for Glasgow Celtic, or maybe even a writer

Q: Which three words describe you best?

Mischievous. Mischievous. Mischievous.

Q: What is your favourite word?

Q: What are you afraid of?

I often visit seacliffs to photograph them (I collect seacliffs!) I sometimes crawl too near the edge and then I get I crawl back again.

Q: What is your most treasured possession?

The books my wife and daughter have made for me.

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

Can running be classed as a hobby??? It's a sport I guess but anyway, what the heck. I love running. I run most days and I used to compete in marathons and triathlons. I have almost run the total equatorial distance around planet Earth....25,000 miles.

Q: What strange habits do you have?

I dress up as Charlie Chaplin.

Q: What’s your favourite food?

Pasta, porridge, pears and any other food beginning with a 'p' - not peas though.

Q: What do you day dream about?

Visiting other planets that have there's wonder for you!

Q: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done?

Once I was very ill and had to stay in bed...I got really bored so I got up and scattered balloons, streamers, empty bottles and cans, confetti and toys all over the bedroom so that when my wife came home from work she would think I'd had a party. She didn't laugh, she just made me tidy everything up.

Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?

Oh I feel very much younger than my actual age...that's becasue I run every day and I eat healthily and I'm a good boy!

Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

The great, the wonderful, the fantastic Mr Charlie Chaplin!!! (He was a comedian in the black & white silent films.)

Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?

I like people who laugh a lot.

Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

If you are on your bike, always apply the back brake first, and always turn right. never turn left. Best advice I've ever was from a policeman...the third policeman I think.

Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?

My left leg is shorter than my right leg so I'd like to have my right leg lengthened to compensate for this.

Q: What has life taught you?

Be careful if you go to the seacliffs...they can be very dangerous places!
