The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?
Unhappy. I was youngest and smallest in my class, and got picked on.
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
A superhero. Preferably the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four.
Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?
A couple of weeks ago, when my daughter covered herself with a fake-fur rug and pretended to be a bear. Both my children can be very entertaining!
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
My Taylor acoustic guitar.
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
I sing - I'm currently in an a capella group called Zing - and I run. I've run 3 marathons so far.
Q: What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
I'd love to earn a living as a singer-songwriter.
Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?
Younger. Sometimes I get a shock when I look in the mirror and see a middle-aged man looking back at me.
Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?
I'd like to be more decisive. At least, I think I would...
Q: How long have you been a writer?
Most of my life - but I had my first book published in 2004.
Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?
No. I've always written things for fun, and when I decided to try to write for publication that was fun too - I hoped I'd be successful, but my thinking was, "Let's see if I can do this" rather than, "I'm going to do this."
Q: Where do you do your writing?
In my shed, at the bottom of the garden, where there are no telephones or internet connections to distract me.
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
Best: I have a job which allows me to daydream as much as I want. Worst: I never know when I start a story whether it will ever be published.
Q: Which of your own characters do you most identify with?
Never having been a headlouse or a Greek god, I don't really identify with many of my characters! My heroes tend to have qualities I'd like to have, though.
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
I've never had a serious case of writers' block, but if I get stuck then I go for a run, or do something else to take my mind off it. The worst thing you can do with writers' block is give it too much attention. You'll only encourage it.
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Q: What book do you wish you had written?
There are many more than just one!
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Read. The more, and more widely, you read, the better a writer you'll be.
