The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?

snap

My favorite lessons were maths, English and science. I can remember seeing my first computer, which was a Commodore "PET" and knowing that I really wanted a computer of my own! I covered my English folder with cartoon drawings as I loved to read comics. Oh, and - I was always too quiet in class!

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

snap

"Something" to do with computers.

Q: Which three words describe you best?

snap

Interested. Honest. Fun.

Q: What is your favourite word?

snap

lugubrious

Q: What makes you cringe?

snap

Watching videos of myself!

Q: What are you afraid of?

snap

Things that could eat me!

Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?

snap

We had some good friends over for a campfire. We played "tweedle-dee / tweedle-dum". The rules are - the two players face each other (very closely!) and the first says, using the most ridiculous voice they can muster, "Hell-o. My name is Tweedle-Dee." To which the other player must respond, "Oh, hell-o. My name is Tweedle-Dum." The player who cracks a smile first loses. I don't think we ever got past the first "Hello"...!

Q: What is your most treasured possession?

snap

Videos of my children when they were little.

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

snap

Create inventions using a "Raspberry Pi"!

Q: What strange habits do you have?

snap

I cannot sleep with any kind of dripping tap/running water noise. I insist on tightening all taps and shutting all bathroom doors at night time.

Q: What’s your favourite food?

snap

Mackeral! Fresh. Barbecued on the beach.

Q: What do you day dream about?

snap

The next book I am going to write.

Q: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done?

snap

I don't know about outrageous, but one of the most fun things I have done is use a "Van der Graaf" generator at cubs to make crazy things happen... Google it to see the types of things I am talking about!

Q: What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

snap

Teacher. I love teaching people of all ages things, especially science and technology. Or maybe classical guitarist. I stalled around grade 6/7 standard and would love to take it further one day.

Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?

snap

Older in the mornings and younger when having fun!

Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

snap

Jesus - no other person comes close!

Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?

snap

Modesty.

Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?

snap

Probably Nepal. I saw rhinos while riding on the back of an elephant, and then climbed so high in the Himalayas we were above the clouds, and as you looked down you could see them flowing over a ridge below.

Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

snap

Don't be afraid of anything and trust in God whatever your situation.

Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?

snap

To have super-powers like Spiderman. Oh, you mean an everyday thing? In that case, just a Spiderman suit would do... :)

Q: What has life taught you?

snap

Don't be afraid of anything and trust in God whatever your situation.

Q: How long have you been a writer?

snap

I started writing Noosum Foosum about four years ago.

Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?

snap

Yes, I was off work for about six months on sick leave and that's when I decided to finish and publish Noosum Foosum.

Q: Where do you do your writing?

snap

In my head at 2am while I'd rather be sleeping!

Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?

snap

The best thing is seeing your imaginings become "real". The worst thing is worrying that people may not like your book.

Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?

snap

I have no idea! If I knew then I would get all my ideas that way and then I could filter out all the not-so great ones!

Q: Which of your own characters do you most identify with?

snap

That's easy - Noosum Foosum. An engineer and inventor, which is my background.

Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?

snap

If a particular story line is not working then I switch to a totally different one and then come back to it.

Q: What was your favourite book as a child?

snap

Richmal Crompton's "Just William" books.

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

snap

C.S.Lewis' Narnia chronicles.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

snap

Do it!
