The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: Which three words describe you best?
It depends who you ask!
Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?
An hour ago - I watched Frasier over breakfast.
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
An artist or poet
Q: What were you like at school?
I had phases - cheerful in the infants, stroppy in the juniors, sporty at the start of secondary, moody in the middle and silent in sixth form.
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
My house because it contains all my other most treasured possessions
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
Singing, walking and chatting to my favourite people on the phone.
Q: What’s your favourite food?
Anything savoury, spicy or sweet
Q: What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
Wildlife warden, mountain rescuer, deep sea diver - well, you did say 'attempt'!
Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?
It comes and goes - I mostly don't think of myself as being any particular age
Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
My paternal grandfather - he died before I was born.
Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?
Kindness and good humour
Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
Shetland. I found it so interesting I went for a holiday and stayed for a decade.
Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?
I'd like to be six inches taller - I don't like the way my children are all much bigger than me!
Q: What has life taught you?
How wonderful it is, even the bumpy bits.
Q: How long have you been a writer?
All my life - but I was first published 15 years ago
Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?
I decided to try and make a career of writing when my youngest child was in playgroup and I was taken on by an agent in the week she started school.
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
The best thing is being able to work whenever and wherever I want to. The worst thing is not having a predictable income.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
I have no idea. They're like surprise presents someone leaves at your door. The important thing is to keep the door open.
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
I don't believe in writer's block. I think writers are seasonal, like plants, and when nothing seems to be happening they're actually just getting ready to burst into blossom!
