being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?
I loved to read and write but I was sometimes naughty too
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
I always wanted to be a writer. I made up stories all the time and told them to my two imaginary friends who went everywhere with me.

Small, dark and funny

Noises in the dark and cream
Q: What are you afraid of?
Violence and crowds

I treasure my children most - and also a dark red pashmina shawl
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
I go jogging every day. I like to cook. Sometimes I knit. I love to dance.
Q: What strange habits do you have?
None, of course!
Q: What’s your favourite food?
One potato, two potatoes, three potatoes, four - and more. You can make so many different and delicious dishes with potatoes.
Q: What do you day dream about?
Travelling all over the world.
Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?
I am both young and old.
Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
Marco Polo who travelled to the East and wrote about it first.
Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?
Honesty and the ability to make decisions
Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
Mongolia, the island of La Reunion and my back garden

Do what you want to do now.
Q: What has life taught you?
When you are up you are up and when you are down you are down but things go round and round
Q: How long have you been a writer?
I started when I was a child. I wrote a novel when I was 11 and my first poems and stories were published when I was 15.
Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?
I always knew I wanted to write.
Q: Where do you do your writing?
At my computer in my study. I always carry a notebook too but often I write so quickly I can hardly read my own writing.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Keep writing and rewriting. Put your writing to one side and come back to it later with fresh eyes. Sometimes the shortest pieces take the longest time.
