is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?
I was very studious, but ‘easily led into mischief’, as I remember!
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
A vet. I ended up studying Medicine, hating it, and transferring to Science and doing a BSc in Zoology.
Q: What is your favourite word?
It’s currently the Spanish for ‘airport’ – aeropuerto .... I love the sound of it!
Q: What makes you cringe?
Watching people putting their feet in it in social situations. And having dental work done.
Q: What are you afraid of?
Having dental work done.
Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?
Last week in the pub.
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
Possibly my treble recorder. It’s made of boxwood and has the most beautiful sound, and it cost an awful lot of money!
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
Play music, mainly flute and recorder, with friends; knit stripy socks; garden.
Q: What strange habits do you have?
I hate people putting milk into my tea without taking the teabag out. Is that strange?
Q: What’s your favourite food?
Fish and chips. With brown sauce and a pickled onion. Salt and vinegar on the chips but NOT on the fish. Brown sauce in a pool, NOT squirted all over.
Q: What do you day dream about?
Holidays .... my latest book .... what’s growing in the garden
Q: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done?
Went on The Weakest Link. And yes – was voted off first ...

Always try to treat people the way you think they would like to be treated, not the way you would like to treat them

My teeth. I’d like more.

20 years
Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?
Yes. On a significant birthday I heard an ad for a writers group and I thought – it’s time to put my money where my mouth is and DO something about wanting to be a writer. I never looked back.

At a big window with bird feeders outside
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
Best is getting paid to do what you like doing. Worst is rejections. I still get rejections.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
Mostly other people.
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
Move. Drive, walk, cycle ... whatever.

Research your market, especially for children. It’s vital to know what’s being published.
