Authors Hotline - Where authors and their readers connect

The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What is your favourite word?

snap

Idiosyncratic. It just sounds fabulous.

Q: What makes you cringe?

snap

Embarassing TV programmes. I can't stand things like The X Factor; it's just so mean!

Q: What’s your favourite food?

snap

Too many to list! I love bread; any type at all. There's nothing like a thick slice of fresh, warm bread spread with a thin layer of melting, salty butter. Yum, yum, yum.

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

snap

Making stuff. I like knitting, crochet, sewing, cake baking, screen printing.... I love going for long walks (usually where I get a bit lost) and going to the cinema is fun, too, as long as I can have a packet of Fruit Gums.

Q: What do you day dream about?

snap

Opening a tea shop by the sea. As long as I don't have to get up early to open up, though!

Q: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done?

snap

I once trekked through the Amazon rainforest for eight days with nothing but a torch, a packet of Polos and a penguin for company. Only joking. Or am I?

Q: What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

snap

Archaeology would be very interesting. I wanted to do Archaeology A Level, but the course was cancelled as not enough people were interested. Bah.

Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?

snap

Queen Elizabeth I. Now she was an awesome chick.

Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?

snap

Honesty.

Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?

snap

Atlantis was pretty cool. Not as cool as the Moon, mind you, but it had lots of interesting architecture.

Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?

snap

I have stupidly short arms. I would like to be able to reach the top shelf in the kitchen without a step ladder.

Q: What were you like at school?

snap

A goody two shoes! I was too scared of being told off to get into trouble. Not that I wanted to cause any trouble; I liked - and still like - learning too much to miss anything.

Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

snap

My Year 2 teacher told me: "Take time to play. It is the secret to eternal youth." Now, being only seven years old at the time I didn't really understand it, but I've always remembered it.

Q: How long have you been a writer?

snap

For as long as I can remember. When I was little, I used to hide away in my room making up stories with my toys. These days I tend to write more with my pictures than with my words, but they're both important ways to tell stories.

Q: Where do you do your writing?

snap

At home. It has to be quiet, though. No music or noise at all, otherwise I just can't concentrate on the words. It's the opposite when I'm drawing, though. I love to listen to audiobooks and get lost in the tales while I'm working.

Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?

snap

Take a break. Ideas will never come if you force them. I usually get my best ideas when I'm least expecting them, like in the shower or just walking down the street.

Q: What was your favourite book as a child?

snap

I had lots of favourites. I always enjoyed the Narnia books, although I was always too scared to finish the last one!

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

snap

Harry Potter. I'm a MASSIVE fan. I love how well thought out and believable his world is. Plus, of course, I'd be a gazillionaire!

Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?

snap

Anywhere and everywhere. It might be an interesting shape or a colour or place. Anything at all, really.
