Authors Hotline - Where authors and their readers connect
CW4K

The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?

snap

I was a bit cheeky but only with teachers I liked. And sometimes I was enthusiastic and sometimes I wasn't. I loved English and Drama and acted my socks off whenever I got the chance.

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

snap

I wanted to be a native American Indian and a great horse rider.

Q: Which three words describe you best?

snap

Smiley, impish and funny.

Q: What makes you cringe?

snap

Dog poo! Especially when I step in it.

Q: What are you afraid of?

snap

My old head teacher. I'm so glad I don't go to school any more. She was terrifying.

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

snap

I sing, I dance and I walk. I watch plays in the theatre, and films, and listen to music and Radio 4. I like to travel and read a lot.

Q: What’s your favourite food?

snap

Spicy! Yum!

Q: What do you day dream about?

snap

Adventures. Characters in stories. Plots. And what is going to happen next. I think most writers are daydreamers. Just as well really.

Q: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done?

snap

Playing at hairdressers with my friend Valerie when I was six and really letting her cut my hair the day before I was going to my aunt's wedding. I was very spiky. Things have got worse since but I'm not telling you about that.

Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?

snap

Most definitely, yes!!!

Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?

snap

I admire people who really face up to problems and try and try again to overcome them.

Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?

snap

Australia. Indoors it felt just like being in England until I heard the birdsong, saw the kangaroos jumping and met a possum. It was a hot land, strange and fascinating.

Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

snap

Set small achievable goals and not one big daunting one that appears impossible to achieve.

Q: What has life taught you?

snap

I think life as taught me to be as true to myself as possible. But also to remember other people. They count as much as I do. I try to kind and polite, friendly and fun. It's usually appreciated.

Q: How long have you been a writer?

snap

Over thirty years now. I should be getting better at it.

Q: Where do you do your writing?

snap

In the attic room a the top of my house. It's the perfect space with a window that looks across a valley to the distant river Severn.

Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?

snap

The best thing about being an author is getting a book published the worst is sitting chewing a pencil wondering what to write next.

Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?

snap

It's always difficult to say but I think from real life and my imagination. From things I've read and seen and thought about that sink somewhere into the back of my head and swim around in a sea of thoughts and pop to the surface again. Then I go eureka and write the idea down before I forget it.

Q: Which of your own characters do you most identify with?

snap

All my heroes and heroines. I suspect I want to be them.

Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?

snap

Give up and go for a nice long walk. That usually does the trick.

Q: What was your favourite book as a child?

snap

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. And it's still in print after all these years. A classic.

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

snap

The one I keep meaning to write but somehow keep putting off.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

snap

Keep writing and read, read, read, anything and everything you can get your hands on.
