The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?
I was a dreamer - the kid who was always looking out the window when I should have been listening. Also, I was painfully shy.
Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
A ballet dancer - even though I was so plump, I couldn't touch my toes. By the age of 11, I knew I wanted to be a children's writer.
Q: What are you afraid of?
Sometimes I'll take the stairs rather than use a lift - I'm not keen on small, enclosed spaces.
Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?
About five minutes ago! Lots of things make me laugh.
Q: What is your most treasured possession?
I collect stones and have several on my desk, like one from Berkshire which could have been used to make a spear head. Stones are so permanent - they've been here for ages and will be here when we're gone.
Q: What do you do as a hobby?
I love hiking in scenic places, and also going to see a really good movie.
Q: What strange habits do you have?
Sleeping with a sleep mask over my eyes and a pillow over my head.
Q: What’s your favourite food?
Mint chocolate chip ice cream. Also popcorn. Not together!
Q: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done?
I really want to climb Mount Etna on Sicily and look down into the volcano - watch this space!
Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?
Younger! Inside, I'm still about 11.
Q: What would you most like to change about yourself?
Lots of things, but some I'm just going to have to learn to accept.
Q: What has life taught you?
Be careful what you put into your mind - that's what will come out. As a writer, I want to read and watch stories/films that enrich me, rather than things that pull me down.
Q: Was there a specific moment in your life when you decide to become a writer?
When I was a kid, after I read a book by George MacDonald, I decided I wanted to write for children when I grew up.
Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?
Best - sitting around daydreaming, thinking up stories. Going into schools is a lot of fun, too. Worst - having to sit at the computer for long periods. I'm very restless and prefer to be moving around.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
Ideas are everywhere. Writers see an ordinary situation and ask, 'what if' - then they imagine some strange twist and it can turn into a story.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Read lots of good books, and work hard on your writing. If you can't imagine doing anything else, then keep at it and don't give up!
