Authors Hotline - Where authors and their readers connect
CW4K

The Author Hotline

is being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What were you like at school?

snap

A bit of a swot, I suspect - I enjoyed school, particularly science and English.

Q: What is your most treasured possession?

snap

I'm a bit of a gadget freak, so it's probably my iPhone.

Q: What do you do as a hobby?

snap

I conduct a choir - I've loved singing ever since school, and have sung all over the country. I didn't set out to be a conductor, but the conductor of a choir I was in retired and no one else wanted to do it!

Q: What’s your favourite food?

snap

Almost anything with barbeque sauce. Take me to a good American restaurant and I'm in heaven.

Q: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done?

snap

Taking part in a huge practical joke that was a made up ceremony that involved stopping the traffic in Cambridge city centre, a set of Latin responses and slapping a professor across the face with a fish.

Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?

snap

I love Avebury stone circle in Wiltshire - there's something so amazing about these stones that were in put in place thousands of years ago. It's very atmospheric.

Q: How long have you been a writer?

snap

As long as I can remember. I made my own comics at junior school and tried writing a novel at secondary school. But the first thing I had published was in a magazine when I was in my 20s.

Q: Where do you do your writing?

snap

Boring, really, but sitting at my desk. I do most of it straight onto a computer, but if I'm thinking up new ideas, I prefer to get away from the screen with a pen and paper.

Q: What are the best and worst things about being an author?

snap

Best is the variety - one day I might be going down to the BBC for interview, another day talking at a school, another day actually writing. And I get to walk my dog whenever I want. Worst, I think, is not having a regular wage coming in.

Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?

snap

I don't really believe in writer's block - I think it's another term for feeling lazy. I just sit down and make myself write. Sometimes what comes out will be rubbish, and it's like pulling teeth - but I still manage to write.

Q: What was your favourite book as a child?

snap

I loved Alan Garner's books, and my favourite changed as I grew older from the Alderley Edge books when I was about 11 to the Owl Service in my later teens.

Q: What book do you wish you had written?

snap

Almost anything by Neil Gaiman - I think his books are excellent.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

snap

Keep trying. You've got to be prepared to take lots of knocks and rejections if you want to be an author, but if you've got talent you will eventually make it.
