The Author Hotline
is
being developed by CW4K, or Creative Writing 4 Kids. They are the company behind a website that enables children to create and publish their own stories online. In its first year it has signed up over 2000 members and has been enthusiastically received by children, parents and teachers. In fact the response has been so encouraging that they are planning a huge expansion of its services. Embedding The Author Hotline into the site is part of that expansion...

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?
When I was 5 I wanted to be a dinner lady but then found I liked drawing pictures so much I then changed my mind and decided I'd like to be an artist!
Q: What is your favourite word?
chocolate
Q: What makes you cringe?
When people don't say "thank you", especially to staff in restaurants or shop assistants, and "sorry", when they really, really should say "sorry!"
Q: When did you last have a really good laugh?
This morning when my son was monkeying about.
Q: What’s your favourite food?
cake
Q: What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
Being a taste tester for Cadbury's......
Q: Do you feel younger or older than your current age?
Younger, usually by about 90 years.
Q: If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
A woolly mammoth, and hopefully be able to time travel it back for my daughter.
Q: What quality do you most admire in a person?
Kindness.
Q: What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?
Rome, it was fascinating seeing people's houses and shops built around amazing ancient Roman ruins.
Q: What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Follow your gut instinct.
Q: How long have you been a writer?
I've been an illustrator for about 15 years.
Q: Where do you do your writing?
I draw pictures in my studio.
Q: Where do you get your greatest ideas from?
Things just pop out of my head after a long time gazing out of the window usually. My kids are an inspiration too, always something amusing happens or hilarious things said.
Q: Which of your own characters do you most identify with?
My cat Sid. If I were a cat I'd like to think I would be him. He's looks abit daft but is very wise underneath.
Q: What do you do to combat “writers’ block”?
Go for a walk in the beautiful hills where I live.
Q: What was your favourite book as a child?
Captain Slaughterboard by Mervyn Peake.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
I'd say to any aspiring illustrators is be true to yourself, work hard, keep going through any problems you might come across, stick to deadlines and above all, have fun.
